Sponging and Masking Halloween Tutorial

Thanks for all your well wishes for my kiddos and I. They are on the mend while mommy is now in the thick of it, but this too shall pass :) The whining at least has ceased a bit :)
This tutorial can be followed for any type of 'scene' you'd like to kreate, just change out your colors and stamps/images. The sponging and masking technique were inspired by Michelle Zindorf after meeting her at Fall Fest a few months ago and kreating this card with her. At her request, she asked that we not give a tutorial on that card as it was an exclusive for her downline. But my friends, its not hard, so give it a try. I'll be doing more of these in the future (I'm thinking of another snow scene), so if you don't want to miss it, subscribe to my blog to receive an email every time I post a new kreation (No Spam, I promise!) OK, Get out some sponges and your inks and lets get started. See supplies list below TIP: You get 3 large Sponges per package, take 1 and divide into 4 pie shapes - gets you lots more sponges! This is my cutesy, spooky Halloween card, that I will walk you through. When sponging the colors of your sky, always use at least 2 colors one of a lighter hue. TIP: Make sure to let your lighter color show through and not cover it with your darker shades. Here we go...








Start with a 4 x 5-1/4 piece of Whisper White.
Using a sticky note, pop out a 1-3/4" Circle Punch for you moon. TIP: make sure to pop it out where there is 'sticky' on the back or apply a little Removable Dotto adhesive.
Next stamp your pumpkin from Autumn Harvest. To isolate colors, use markers directly onto your stamp. Dusty Durango pumpkin and Old Olive stem


Tear a piece of sticky note or scrap paper to mask off your grass (yellow paper is acting as a mask). On another piece of scrap/sticky note, stamp out your pumpkin to again use as a mask.
Begin to sponge, using light circular motions, your sky with Basic Gray
Leaving a slightly lighter area of gray to cast a yellowish glow from your moon toward your pumpkin. Sponge that area lightly with Crushed Curry
Now go back over your 'gray' sky with Basic Black to get a spookier look :)


Remove your masks. Lightly go over parts of your stark white moon with a little more Crushed Curry


Place your pumpkin mask back onto your pumpkin.
Sponge in your grass, first with Certainly Celery and then again with Old Olive. Kreate areas of darkness around the pumpkin, for a shadow, as well as the skyline. To do this, just continue to apply the Old Olive ink (add a little bit more pressure as you rub your sponge onto your paper) until you achieve the darkness that you want



Using your Basic Black Marker - freehand a tree and limb
Stamp your owl (over the moon, so you have the white to color in), from Forest Friends, onto the branch. I used Jet Black Stazon for a crisp black image
Add some 'whispy' clouds over your moon with your sponge and Basic Gray


Color in your owl - I used Creamy Caramel
Color in your pumpkin - I used Apricot Appeal for the lighter front area and Pumpkin Pie at the sides and then 'blended' them, by going over the whole pumpkin with Apricot Appeal again


Add your jack o lantern face with Jet Black Stazon ink.
What a difference a White Signo Gel Pen makes!!! Take your white pen and add highlights to your tree, owl, and pumpkin. Hint: If you have trouble getting this pen started, simply roll it onto the back of your hand, the oils in your skin help to get the ink flowing
Add your sentiment from Teeny Tiny Wishes, again in Jet Black Stazon ink - I use this for a darker crisper black
Take an Old Olive Marker and add some grassy patches to your lawn



Freehand a few bats with your Basic Black Marker, highlighted with a few specks of White Gel Pen and you've done it!!!



Distress the edges of your card, mount it on Pumpkin Pie and then on a standard card base of Basic Black.

LET THE HOPPIN’ BEGIN!

Halloween isn't my favorite. I'm not into the spooky, eerie, gremliny, witchy side of the day, but I do enjoy the Fall. It is such a pretty time of the year, so my focus turns to leaves, pumpkins, scarecrows, hayrides, apple pies :) ... So, Autumn Harvest (110372) is the only 'halloweenish' type set that I own - that little jack-o'latern face quickly lends itself to a halloween pumpkin. So my non-halloween friends out there, see what you can do :) A little versatility in your sets goes a long way! I did pair it with another non-Halloween set, Forest Friends(113748) to kreate my 'spooky' scene. I needed my Booo hootin' Owl :) A free hand tree and bats accented with my White Signo Pen help (?) to spook it up a bit. Ok I tried anyway... does cutesy spooky work?



A coordinating tag, kreated using the Big Shot and the Two Tags Die(115954), is attached to my container with glue dots, for presentation, of a sweet little treat. After you eat this yummy treat, pop off this tag and use it as a bookmark for your thrilling novel :) Don't you just love this 1-1/4" Pumpkin Pie Striped Grosgrain ribbon (115616), bedazzled with an Circle Fire Rhinestone Brad(109110). My sentiments for each project come from Teeny Tiny Wishes(115370)






Or snip out your 'spooky' little jack o'laterns and add them to a box to fill with some yummy treats. This 'crate' is kreated with the Big Shot and Box #2 Die (114518)( 2 of them adhered together with Sticky Strip), Night and Day Specialty Paper (116768) , the Word Window Punch and Large Oval Punch. And that fabulous Wide Striped Pumpkin Pie Ribbon again . Oh the possibilities are always endless with the Big Shot :)

Ho Ho Ho

I was ecstatic to know that Michelle Zindorf is a part of our regional group of SU Demo's and she was to teach us one of her fabulous techniques at Fall Fest a few weeks ago. All about the sponge and masking... isn't this so pretty (if I do say so myself). Not an easy card to photograph for some reason, it is much prettier in person... But yes, I did kreate it, from the step by step direction from Michelle. Its really not that difficult and if it were, who cares, look at the end result! Can't you just hear Santa jingling his sleigh bells with a deep belly 'Ho Ho Ho'?! Let me know what you think, love it when you do!

Simply Vintage

I'm off for a long weekend, but I'll be back Monday - especially to announce the final Deal of the Week.
I think Bermuda Bay and Soft Suede gives a sense of vintage as does this set, Friends 24-7. Its been my go to set lately, this vintagey card being my favorite kreation with it thus far. The recipient of this card likes rustic, antique, vintage - I think she will like it. I thought I'd make a very simple, no layers, easy to replicate monogram card and if she likes them, she (or I) can quickly make some more.

* Bermuda Bay standard card base 5-1/2 x 4-1/4 scored at the top. Corners detailed with a Corner Rounder Punch. Hint: make sure to do the corners on both the front and back of the card
* Image (flourish?) from Friends 24-7 is inked in Whisper White Craft and then heat embossed with White Embossing Powder. Tip: You will need to use either VersaMark or Craft ink for your embossing as this ink is sticky and allows the powder to adhere to it before setting with your heat tool
* Inked in Bermuda Bay is my monogram from Lovely Letters onto Whisper White, then punched out with the Scallop Square Punch and placed it on my card with dimensionals
* The edges of my Scallop Square were given a deeper sponging of Soft Suede and then lightly I sponged over the entire square
* The edges of the card and card front were also sponged in Soft Suede, the edges given a little more attention for a deeper/darker look.
* Tied a Kraft Taffeta bow and adhered with a mini glue dot

Pretty quick card to kreate. Hope she'll like it
